Paris has the highest concentration of world-class paid museums of any city. The Museum Pass covers the Louvre, Orsay, and Versailles — but not every major institution, and not every visitor needs it. Here's when the maths works.
Museum passes
Museum passes are a different product from city sightseeing passes. They're built for visitors who want to go deep on a city's cultural institutions — not tick off a broad list of landmarks and attractions. The tradeoff is focus: more value per museum, fewer options outside them.
The catch in most European cities is that some of the best museums are free to enter anyway. Knowing which ones are behind a paywall — and which aren't — is what these guides are for. See also: free museum entry in Europe by city.

- →Museum pass guideRome museum pass: is it worth it?
Rome has no dedicated museum pass — Roma Pass, Go City Explorer, and Omnia each cover the city's museums differently. Here's which one actually fits a museum-focused trip.
- →Museum pass guideAmsterdam museum pass: is it worth it?
The Museumkaart is the same €75 annual pass every Dutch resident buys, capped at 5 visits for tourists. Whether that beats the I amsterdam City Card or Go City comes down to one thing: how many museums are actually on your list.
- →Museum pass guideVienna museum pass: is it worth it?
Vienna has no dedicated museum pass — two competing city passes cover the art museums, but only one includes Albertina and Leopold Museum. Here's which to buy, and when individual tickets beat both.
- →Museum pass guideFlorence museum pass: is it worth it?
The Firenzecard covers 60+ museums — Uffizi, Accademia, Pitti, Medici Chapels, Bargello — for €85 over 72 hours. The maths works at five venues. The Duomo complex is not included, and neither is the €40 Passepartout that beats it for shorter trips.
- →Museum pass guideBarcelona museum pass: is it worth it?
Barcelona's Articket covers six art museums — Picasso, Miró, MNAC, MACBA, Tàpies, and CCCB — for €38 with skip-the-line access. It covers none of the Gaudí circuit. Who it's for and when the maths works.
- →Museum pass guidePittsburgh museum pass: is there one?
Pittsburgh has no CityPASS, Go City, or iVenture Card coverage. Here's what the RAD Pass actually is (a residents-only programme), what individual tickets cost at the Carnegie Museums, Warhol, and National Aviary, and how to visit without overpaying.
- →Museum pass guideBerlin Museum Pass: is it worth it?
