San Antonio city pass: is it worth it?

CityPASS and Go City both cover San Antonio's top attractions — but for different trips. Here's when each one saves money and when neither does.

San Antonio has two pass programmes covering largely the same visitor — but they are structured for different trips. San Antonio CityPASS ($63 adult) bundles any four attractions from a pool of eight, all within the downtown core and Museum Reach. Go City's Essentials Pass ($114 adult, 3-choice) opens the same downtown circuit but adds something CityPASS does not have: a premium slot that can include SeaWorld San Antonio, Aquatica, or Natural Bridge Caverns.

Which pass saves money — and whether either does — depends on which attractions you were actually going to visit. The savings gap between the right combination and the wrong combination is wider in San Antonio than in most CityPASS cities, because the pool spans from $14 (The Alamo Exhibit) to $40 (Zoo) and $24 (Museum of Art). Knowing which end of that range to prioritise is most of the analysis.

How each pass works

San Antonio CityPASS is a fixed-choice-bundle. You pay $63 upfront and get one-time admission to any four of eight attractions, visited in any order over nine consecutive days from first use. No need to choose in advance — decide as you go. CityPASS states a combined regular price of $107.10 adult across four representative attractions, implying a saving of up to $44.10. Whether you reach that saving depends on which four you pick. Unused passes are refundable for 365 days from purchase.

Go City San Antonio runs an Essentials Pass (3 choices, $114 adult / $104 child) and Explorer Pass tiers (2, 4, or 5 choices — current pricing at gocity.com). Every tier includes exactly one premium attraction: SeaWorld San Antonio (up to $83 gate), Aquatica San Antonio (up to $77), or Natural Bridge Caverns Outdoor Discovery Package (up to $82). Remaining choices come from a pool of 15+ standard attractions. Passes are valid 30 days from first use; non-activated passes are refundable within 90 days of purchase.

CityPASS: what to pick and what to skip

The CityPASS pool has a wider gate-price range than most visitors expect. At the top sits the San Antonio Museum of Art at $24 — the highest adult gate value in the pool, and one that many visitors overlook because it is not the obvious San Antonio landmark. The Zoo runs $39.99 on an any-day ticket (flex pricing means off-peak weekday dates come in lower). Together, SAMA and the Zoo account for nearly $64 of gate value on just two slots — already exceeding the $63 pass price before picking the remaining two.

The Botanical Garden ($22), Tower of the Americas ($21.11), DoSeum ($18), Witte Museum ($17), and River Cruise ($16.78) sit in the middle range. Any two of these alongside the Zoo or SAMA push the combined gate value comfortably above $63. The weakest adult pick is The Alamo Exhibit at $14 — not a bad attraction, but financially the lowest contribution of any option in the pool.

One family-specific nuance: the San Antonio Museum of Art admits children 12 and under free at the gate, regardless of pass. If your group has young children, a CityPASS slot on SAMA saves nothing on the child tickets — the DoSeum ($18 per child) or Zoo ($34.99 child) serve that portion of the bill better.

The only reservation required within the CityPASS pool is The Alamo Exhibit — book through the My CityPASS app as soon as you purchase. The Go Rio River Cruise also requires physical ticket pickup at the Go Rio Historia booth on the River Walk before boarding; the digital pass alone does not grant entry to the boat.

Go City: the theme-park case

The structural difference between Go City and CityPASS in San Antonio is one attraction: SeaWorld. CityPASS's eight-option pool is entirely museums, gardens, and cultural sites. Go City's premium slot opens the pass to SeaWorld San Antonio — a full theme park at up to $83 gate — alongside the wider city circuit.

On a 3-choice Essentials Pass at $114, using the premium slot on SeaWorld gives you SeaWorld plus two more picks from the standard pool. Go City's own sample itinerary — SeaWorld + Zoo + Missions Tour — totals $203.33 at gate prices against a $114 pass, a saving of $89. That is the Go City headline case in San Antonio, and it is legitimate when that combination reflects your actual plans.

The premium constraint is worth stating plainly: each tier — 2, 3, 4, or 5 choices — includes exactly one premium attraction. You cannot use two choices on both SeaWorld and Aquatica on the same pass regardless of tier size. Visitors planning both a theme park and a water park in the same trip will pay full price for one of them. This restriction is the most common source of negative Go City San Antonio reviews.

For a visitor doing purely the downtown museum and culture circuit — Zoo, River Cruise, museums, gardens — Go City's 3-choice Essentials at $114 is more expensive than CityPASS's 4-choice bundle at $63 for a comparable selection. The premium slot is where Go City's price premium over CityPASS is justified. Without it in your plan, run the specific price comparison before choosing Go City.

Savings in numbers: four scenarios

Scenario 1 — Adults, culture and nature: San Antonio Museum of Art ($24) + Zoo ($39.99) + Botanical Garden ($22) + Witte Museum ($17) = $102.99 gate. CityPASS: $63. Saving: $39.99. The strongest adult combination — four attractions with no weak picks.

Scenario 2 — Family with children under 12: Zoo ($39.99 adult / $34.99 child) + DoSeum ($18 / $18) + Witte Museum ($17 / $11) + Botanical Garden ($22 / $15) = $96.99 adult / $78.99 child gate. CityPASS: $63 adult / $53 child. Saving: $33.99 adult / $25.99 child. SAMA is skipped here — children 12 and under enter free at the gate, so a child CityPASS slot there saves nothing.

Scenario 3 — Theme park trip, Go City 3-choice: SeaWorld ($83) + Zoo ($45) + Missions Tour ($75) = $203 gate. Go City Essentials: $114. Saving: $89. Go City's headline case. Valid when SeaWorld is a genuine plan, not a justification for the pass.

Scenario 4 — Where the saving collapses: River Cruise ($16.78) + Alamo Exhibit ($14) + Tower of the Americas ($21.11) + Botanical Garden ($22) = $73.89 gate. CityPASS: $63. Saving: $10.89. Technically positive but thin enough that one flex-priced Zoo date coming in lower, or one attraction skipped, eliminates it. This is the combination — no Zoo, no SAMA — where the pass barely breaks even.

What neither pass covers

The San Antonio Missions — Mission Concepción, San Juan, San José, and Espada — are free to visit independently. These UNESCO sites require no ticket for the grounds and church structures. Go City offers a guided Missions tour as a pass option, but the underlying site access is free. If the Missions are central to your visit, the financial case for any pass weakens.

The River Walk itself is free public space. Go Rio's narrated boat cruise ($16.78 gate) is an optional paid overlay — not required to walk, dine, or shop along the River Walk.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas is not on either pass at standard admission. Confirm Go City's current premium list at gocity.com before planning around it — SeaWorld and Aquatica are the confirmed premium options as of July 2026.

Who should buy which pass

Buy CityPASS ($63 adult) if: your itinerary includes at least two of the Zoo, SAMA, Botanical Garden, or Witte Museum. Any combination anchored by the Zoo ($40) and SAMA ($24) produces a saving of $25+ before your other two picks. Also the right choice for families with children 3–11 visiting the Zoo, DoSeum, Witte, and Botanical Garden — all have meaningful child gate prices the pass covers.

Buy Go City if: SeaWorld San Antonio, Aquatica, or Natural Bridge Caverns Outdoor is genuinely in your plans alongside at least one or two downtown stops. Go City is the only option that packages a theme park or water park with the wider city circuit. Without the premium slot in your plan, compare Go City's per-choice price against CityPASS's flat $63 for your specific combination before deciding.

Skip both passes if: your trip is centred on free experiences — the Alamo Church, the River Walk, the San Antonio Missions — with only one or two paid attractions alongside. Individual tickets will be cheaper than either pass for a short paid list.

On refund flexibility: CityPASS's 365-day refund window on unused passes is more generous than Go City's 90-day window. For travelers booking far in advance with uncertain plans, CityPASS carries meaningfully lower cancellation risk.
